An analysis by the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) has found that Hispanic and Latino students are attending the state’s community colleges in record numbers.

The report, presented to the State Board for Community Colleges, says that Hispanic and Latino student enrollment grew nearly 58 percent from 2009-2013 and the number of Hispanic graduates increased 150 percent during that time period.

The analysis also found that the number of Hispanic students enrolled in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs has doubled over the past five years. More than one in six Hispanic students are currently enrolled in such programs, the report says. Their grade point averages (GPA) are also rising, with three quarters of Hispanic students earning a GPA of 2.0 or better in 2012-13, compared to 70 percent five years ago.
