Metro will close nine stations in Northern Virginia to perform construction work on the Orange and Silver lines this summer, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) announced Thursday. The projects come at time when Metro service has been drastically limited as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to WMATA, its ridership was down 95% as of April 8.

The construction projects, which start May 23, will affect the following stations:

  • Orange Line: East Falls Church, West Falls Church, Dunn Loring, Vienna
  • Silver Line: McLean, Tysons, Greensboro, Spring Hill, Wiehle-Reston East

All Orange Line trains will begin and end service at Ballston, in Arlington, and the Silver Line will be closed. Free express and local shuttle bus service will be available for essential workers. The projects are expected to continue through the fall.

The work will include demolishing and reconstructing platforms at the Orange Line stations and connecting the Silver Line to its coming “phase II” stations out to Dulles International Airport.

The WMATA has posted additional information about buses and other alternate transportation.
