Metal fabricator Mayville Engineering Company Inc. (MEC) will open a new manufacturing facility in Smyth County, creating 160 jobs.

The company will spend $10 million to open the manufacturing facility in a former Marillat plant in Atkins. MEC operates another manufacturing facility in nearby Wytheville, which employs 83 workers.

MEC offers metal fabrication, tube forming and coatings for a variety of industries, including agricultural, commercial vehicle, construction, forestry, energy, military and industrial markets.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe approved a $300,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to help Smyth with the project, and the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $505,000. Marillat announced in late 2012 that it would close its two cabinet-manufacturing plants in Atkins.
