In March, the Weinsteins pledged $25 million to the University of Richmond to establish a student learning center that will carry the couple’s name. It was the second largest gift from individual donors in the private liberal arts school’s history, Then, in April, the couple put a cherry on that sundae, donating $3 million more to the university’s chaplaincy to support Jewish life at UR.
Familiar names and faces in the Richmond area, Carole and Marcus Weinstein started their Henrico County real estate company, Weinstein Properties, in 1962. The couple met at UR, to which they have donated more than $50 million, also supporting international study abroad programs, faculty research and scholarships. In January, Marcus Weinstein was awarded UR’s Paragon Medal, the university’s highest honor.
The Weinsteins also have given generously to support the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center and the Virginia Holocaust Museum, which houses the Carole Weinstein Holocaust Research Library and for which Marcus Weinstein serves as board chair.
Now semiretired, Marcus Weinstein is chair of Weinstein Properties, which owns and manages more than 21,000 apartment units in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. The couple’s daughter, Allison Weinstein, is the company’s co-president and CEO.
