Virginia Business// August 29, 2022//
A past president of the Virginia Bar Association and the Virginia Law Foundation, Van Buren joined his firm — then known as Canoles, Mastracco, Martone, Barr and Russell — in 1981, after graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law. Also a William & Mary alum, Van Buren comes from the family that formerly owned the Daily Press newspaper in Newport News.
He grew up in the business, working as a paperboy for his first job, and continues to be involved in civic organizations, including the boards for the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges.
Van Buren’s practice is mainly focused on mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance, negotiations, and health care. His cases have included mergers and integrations of medical groups and sales of large automobile dealerships.
He said in an interview this year with Virginia Business that there’s been an “explosion” of major mergers and acquisitions over the past two years, and firms like his have struggled to hire enough attorneys to cover the larger amount of work.
