A Roanoke native, Summerlin practices law in areas ranging from administrative and regulatory — with an emphasis on environmental law — to labor and employment and litigation, as well as leading the direction of Virginia’s fifth largest law firm. Additionally, he counsels clients on government investigations and white-collar criminal defense.
Before Roanoke law firm Woods Rogers merged with Norfolk’s Vandeventer Black firm in 2022, Summerlin was president of Woods Rogers, which he joined after graduating from William & Mary Law School in 1997. The combined firm has 130 attorneys.
Summerlin often represents clients in negotiations and litigation with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and other environmental agencies.
He is an annual speaker at Woods Rogers Vandeventer Black’s Labor and Employment Seminar series and serves as president of the board of trustees for Opera Roanoke and is active with the Jefferson Center performing arts venue in Roanoke. Before attending law school, Summerlin graduated from the University of North Carolina.
