Landmark Apartment Trust of America Inc., a multifamily real estate investment trust (REIT), has relocated its corporate headquarters from Richmond to Tampa, Fla.

The company’s headquarters was located on Dickens Road, where it will retain a satellite office, in addition to a second satellite office in Jupiter, Fla. It owns two properties in Virginia, both located in Portsmouth.

Landmark Apartment Trust, which acquired 50 new apartment communities throughout the Sunbelt last year with a transactional value of about $1 billion, said in a press release that its growth surge prompted the need for more staff and office space. The company wanted the corporate offices closer to the majority of its assets, many of which are located in Tampa and other Florida metropolitan markets — a move it says will facilitate operations.

Landmark Apartment Trust owns and operates 25,000 apartment units and provides management services for an additional 8,000 units owned by affiliates, located throughout the southern United States.
The company’s roots go back in 2005 when Landmark’s CEO, Stanley J. Olander, worked in the multifamily division of Grubb & Ellis in Richmond.  It created an apartment REIT that was renamed Apartment Trust of America in January 2011. Following a major recapitalization in 2012, the company changed its name again.
