The Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke has been awarded a $1 million, three-year federal grant that will be used in a program assisting veterans earning nursing degrees.

The  program now being implemented at the school modifies existing nursing curricula and support services to address the needs of veterans. Ava Porter, the college’s chair of nursing, will serve as the grant’s principal investigator and project director.

The program builds upon initiatives already in place at Jefferson College to support veterans as they prepare for health careers. These initiatives include an assessment program that allows veterans to earn college credit based on specific experience they gained in the military.

Jefferson College has been designated a “Military Friendly School” since 2013 by GI Jobs magazine.

Founded in 1914 as the Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing, Jefferson College has more than 1,100 students.
