Boston-based Iron Mountain Information Management LLC said Wednesday it plans to open its first data center campus in Virginia. The $350 million project in Prince William County, geared for customers in corporate enterprise, government and technology, is expected to create 25 new jobs.
Iron Mountain Information Management, a subsidiary of Iron Mountain Inc., will establish its data center campus on 83 acres at 11650 Hayden Rd in Manassas. The campus will be built in phases and is currently planned for three buildings totaling 375,000 square feet, with future growth capacity. Iron Mountain plans to open the first building in spring 2017.
As an incentive for the project, the Prince William County Board of Supervisors agreed to assign $500,000 in water and sewer availability fee credits to the Industrial Development Authority.
Iron Mountain’s site selection process included a nationwide search. The company said in a press release that Prince William County was chosen due to the availability of large industrial zoned sites and abundant fiber and power.”We explored several U. S. locations for this expansion and Prince William County was a clear frontrunner,” Make Kidd, Iron Mountain's senior vice president and general manager, said in a statement. “Northern Virginia is an important national market for data centers …”
Founded in 1951, Iron Mountain stores and protects billions of information assets, including business documents, backup tapes, electronic files and medical data. The company’s real estate network includes more than 69 million square feet across more than 1,100 facilities in 37 countries.
