Hampton, Richmond score well in safe-driving survey

Drivers in two Virginia cities, Hampton and Richmond, had better than average results in a national survey by Allstate Insurance Co.

Other cities in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia, however, didn’t fare as well in the annual Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report, based on the company’s claim data.

Hampton ranked 51st and Richmond was 55th in a ranking of the nation’s 200 largest cities in terms of the safety record of their drivers.

Hampton drivers averaged 10.2 years between auto collisions, 1.7 percent below the national average of 10 years. Richmond drivers averaged 10.1 years between accidents, 1.2 percent better than the U.S. average.

Other cities listed in the Allstate report included:

Chesapeake, ranked 87th with an average of 9.5 years between accidents.
Newport News, 95th, 9.4 years.
Virginia Beach, 136th, 8.4 years.
Norfolk, 157th, 7.8 years.
Arlington, 185th, 6.7 years.
Alexandria, 188th, 6.2 years.

Topping the list nationally was Fort Collins, Colo., where the average driver was involved in an collision every 13.9 years, 28.2 percent better than the national average. Fort Collins has ranked No. 1 in the list three times in the nine years it has been compiled.
