A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday for the new Virginia Railway Express station that will be located at Potomac Shores, a 1,920-acre master-planned community in Prince William County. The station’s construction is expected to begin in late 2015 and be completed by 2017.
Potomac Shores, which will overlook the Potomac River, is being designed as a “compact, walkable community that is centered on the rail station, thereby allowing for less dependence on automobiles,” according to a news release by SunCal, a California-based real estate company that’s developing the project.
The community will include 3,800 residences; a town center; hotel; two public schools and more than a dozen sports fields and courts.
In 2012, the Federal Railroad Administration authorized $74.8 million to build 11 miles of track from Stafford County to Prince William County for VRE to reach Potomac Shores. The state also has contributed $15 million for the station and SunCal is putting in $20 million towards its construction and design.
