A new affordable apartment development is being brought to life in Gloucester.

The first phase of construction has begun for Riverbend Apartment Homes off of U.S. Route 17 at 6139 George Washington Highway. The 27-acre site was previously the home of the former American Legion Auxiliary Unit 75 building, which has since been demolished.

Plans call for a 130-unit affordable housing community. Completion of phase one is scheduled for the summer of 2020. The second phase will see 88 units added and is planned to get underway this spring.

Last year, S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co. bought the land from Zandler Development Co. for $2.762 million. Wells Fargo, N.A. and AGM Financial Services did the financing on the development.

TS3 Architects, Bay Design Group, Details Ltd. and Siska Aurand Landscape Architects Inc. comprise the design team for Riverbend. Hoy Construction is the general contractor.
