Fairfax-based George Mason University has named S. David Wu as provost, effective July 1. For the past decade, Wu has been dean of the engineering college at Lehigh University, a private institution in Bethlehem, Pa. with nearly 7,000 students. He will succeed Peter N. Stearns, who has been Mason’s provost since 2000.
Wu has worked for Lehigh University for 27 years. As engineering dean, Wu is responsible for annual financial resources of more than $100 million. More than 40 percent of Lehigh’s undergraduates major in engineering; about 65 percent of graduate and research programs also are in engineering.
Wu earned a master’s degree in 1985 and a doctorate in 1987 in industrial engineering from Pennsylvania State University. He received his bachelor’s degree from Tunghai University in Taiwan in 1981.
During his tenure, Stearns helped Mason transition to a new university president and played an active role in the university’s 10-year strategic plan. He will continue to teach at Mason after stepping down as provost.
