George Mason University creates Center for Government Contracting

George Mason University has established the Center for Government Contracting.

The Fairfax-based college says the center will focus on research, education, training and collaboration to address government contracting issues. The center will be part of Mason’s School of Business. Jerry McGinn will serve as the center’s executive director.

 GMU says it’s well positioned to create this center because of the composition of its faculty and students and its proximity to Washington, D.C., and the many companies that make up the $500 billion government contracting industry.

 Additionally, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) announced Thursday that it has established a scholarship endowment at GMU in honor of outgoing President and CEO Gerald L. Gordon. Gordon is retiring Jan 4 after 35 years of service. The endowment will benefit the Honors College at George Mason University.
 

The purpose of the scholarship fund is to provide support for undergraduate students enrolled in the Honors College who are pursuing a degree in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) field, economics, or another discipline relevant to economic development in Fairfax County.

In conjunction with the fund, The Fairfax Economic Forum presented a $20,000 check to the college on Dec. 5. The forum supports conference and other events sponsored by the FCEDA.
Rocky Mitchell announced a $50,000 challenge grant from his employer, Fairfax County-based PenFed Credit Union, to support the fund.
