Charles Steger, the former president of Virginia Tech, has joined the Focused Ultrasound Foundation’s Council,

The Charlottesville-based foundation was started by Dr. Neal F. Kassell, a University of Virginia neurosurgeon, to accelerate the development and adoption of focused ultrasound treatment for a variety of serious medical disorders.

The foundation describes the council as a group of goodwill ambassadors who work closely with the foundation's board of directors, staff advice and assist with raising funds and awareness about focused ultrasound.
Jane Batten, a Hampton Roads philanthropist, is co-chair of the 30-member foundation council.

Steger was president of Virginia Tech for 14 years, during which the university’s research portfolio rose 250 percent, Tech  collaborated with Carilion Clinic in creating a Roanoke-based medical school and a fundraising campaign attracted more than a $1 billion in donations.

Steger currently is on the board of the National Institute of Building Sciences, a member of the Economic Club of Washington and a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects.
