A Radford native, Asbury became president of Atlantic Union Bankshares, the holding company for Atlantic Union Bank, in 2016. He was named CEO the following year, passing the presidency on to Maria Tedesco, who was named the bank’s chief operating officer in January, while continuing as president. Tedesco is now tasked with “oversight of the complete end-to-end customer experience and daily bank operations,” Asbury said in a statement. The move, he explained, allows him to focus on corporate strategy.

With 153 banking offices located throughout Virginia and in portions of Maryland and North Carolina, Atlantic Union is Virginia’s largest independent bank. The company reported a net income of about $264 million for 2021 and has $20 billion in assets.

A graduate of Virginia Tech and William & Mary, Asbury came to Atlantic Union with more than 30 years of experience in banking. Previously, he was president and CEO at First National Bank of Santa Fe.
