Over a decade has passed since Grinspoon, along with advisers John Verfurth and Richard Weeks, left Morgan Stanley to create their own firm, VWG Wealth Management.
The three decided to launch a registered investment adviser (RIA) firm following the 2008 Great Recession. RIA firms have a fiduciary responsibility to act in their clients’ best interest and avoid the conflict of interest associated with paid commissions. VWG elected to partner with aggregator Hightower Advisors LLC, which handles things like compliance and technology for firms in its network. That move, Grinspoon told Forbes in 2020, allowed the founders to focus on managing money.
In 2022, VWG has more than $2 billion of assets under management.
Grinspoon began his financial adviser career at Legg Mason in 1998 before moving to Morgan Stanley in 2001. He ranked 65th on Forbes’ 2021 list of the 250 top wealth advisers. In 2022, Barron’s listed Grinspoon as the No. 4 financial adviser in Virginia.
Grinspoon earned both his undergraduate degree and MBA from the University of Maryland. He enjoys spending time with his family, exercising and playing golf.
