Founded by Dean’s grandfather in 1949 as an electrical construction company, M.C. Dean was still a relatively small business, with just 150 employees, when Dean became CEO in 1997. Today, M.C. Dean has more than 5,200 employees worldwide, including 2,000 in Virginia, and the privately owned design-build systems integration company reportedly earned $1.3 billion in 2021 revenue.
In the past few years, M.C. Dean has received a $250 million Pentagon contract and a $98 million Navy contract to develop security systems, and in April, the company acquired International Energy Conservation Systems, a provider for buildings’ automation systems. In August, Gov. Glenn Youngkin attended a ribbon-cutting for M.C. Dean’s 168,000-square-foot, $63 million expansion at its Modular Mission Critical manufacturing campus in Caroline County.
In December 2022, Dean and Haute Living magazine co-hosted an art exhibit by Domingo Zapata at Dean’s $40 million Terra Veritas Villa estate in Miami Beach, Florida.
A North Carolina State University alum, Dean was inducted into its Electrical and Computer Engineering Hall of Fame in 2015 and serves on the Washington Airports Task Force board.
