Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax has started a multi-million renovation that will include major upgrades and new amenities. The project will be completed in two phases, with renovations targeted for completion by the 2014 holiday season.

Upgrades to the mall and grounds will include new lighting, flooring, entrances, landscaping and interior and exterior signage. New seating areas throughout the mall will be outfitted with contemporary modular furnishings and “tech tables” with charging outlets and high-top stools. Fair Oaks also will introduce free Wi-Fi throughout the enclosed, two-level mall.

The Ted Britt Ford Lincoln Court and Fair Oaks play area are the first interior areas currently under renovation. Interior fountains are being removed to make way for additional modular seating.

All five mall entrances will receive major upgrades. The entrances will be demolished and replaced with more contemporary, welcoming and identifiable entrances. Entrances will remain open to shoppers throughout the renovations.

Fair Oaks’ grounds and five main vehicle entrances, accessed from I-66, Route 50/Lee Jackson Memorial Highway and Fair Lakes Parkway, are currently being landscaped and will have new mall as well as vehicular directional and way-finding signage.

According to a news release, work will be done at night, while the mall is closed, to minimize disruptions to shoppers and tenants. Work will be suspended during the 2013 holiday season.

Fair Oaks, which opened in 1980, is one of the region’s largest shopping destinations. Located off I-66 at Route 50, less than 18 miles from Washington D.C., the 1.5 million-square-foot mall offers 200 shops, services and dining options including Lord & Taylor, Macy’s I and II, Sears and JCPenney.
