As president of James Madison University, Alger led the public university’s $200 million fundraising campaign and the building of an 8,500-seat arena and academic buildings. He also oversaw the implementation of a COVID-19 vaccination campaign and the renaming of three academic buildings previously named for Confederates. In August, JMU’s first vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion, Malika Carter, started her work.

A Swarthmore College alumnus who earned a law degree from Harvard University, Alger came to JMU in 2012 after serving as senior vice president and general counsel at Rutgers University. He also was assistant general counsel at the University of Michigan, where he was an adviser in two U.S. Supreme Court cases on diversity in college admissions.

HOBBIES: For many years, I was a choral singer. I am also a coin collector.

FAVORITE SONG: “On My Way to You,” by Barbra Streisand. It was the first dance with my wife at our wedding 25 years ago this year.
