Health Care 2024: DR. MICHAEL McDERMOTT

A radiologist, McDermott has led Mary Washington Healthcare since 2015. Previously, he practiced with Radiologic Associates of Fredericksburg. He has a medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and an MBA from the University of Virginia.

Mary Washington Healthcare began as an eight-room hospital in Fredericksburg in 1899 and now encompasses two hospitals, four emergency departments and more than 60 health care facilities. Under McDermott’s leadership, the health system seems poised for more growth.

During a May work session, members of the Fredericksburg City Council discussed a proposal to amend a development plan for Mary Washington Hospital to allow a $40 million expansion of the campus. It would include a two-story medical clinic and a three-story office building/conference center.

Fredericksburg Mayor Kerry Devine said she had a concern about expanding a hospital that received a ‘D’ in its spring safety report from the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit watchdog organization based in Washington, D.C. A Mary Washington executive attending the meeting said the ‘D’ grade was caused by a problem with documentation. Despite concerns, in June the plan was unanimously approved.
