Dominion Virginia Power is installing 240 solar panels on the roof of Virginia Union University’s Thomas H. Henderson Center.

The system will become a demonstration site under Dominion’s Solar Partnership Program. Demonstration sites are locations design to offer customer outreach and education on the use of solar technologies.

The system will be capable of generating about 70 kilowatts of electricity, which is enough to power 18 homes. Electricity from the system will follow to Dominion’s electric grid.

The panels are expected to be operational by October.

Dominion’s solar program is authorized to build and operate up to 30 megawatts of solar facilities on leased rooftops of commercial businesses and public properties. When complete, the program will generate enough power for 7,500 homes.

Dominion has completed rooftop solar installations at the Canon Industrial Resource Technologies facility in Gloucester and Old Dominion University in Norfolk.
