Dallas-based CyrusOne has broken ground on a 654,000-square-foot data center in Loudoun County.
The facility will be located on a 40-acre site the company bought earlier this year in the 424-acre Kincora mixed-use development.
When completed, the new data center will house CyrusOne’s fifth facility in Northern Virginia.
“The start of construction on the Northern Virginia Sterling V data center is another major milestone for CyrusOne,” Kevin Timmons, the company’s chief technology officer, said in a statement. “Our rapid expansion in Northern Virginia is indicative of the growing need for our hyper-speed and hyper-scalable data center solutions.”
An estimated 70 percent of U.S. Internet traffic passes through Loudoun.
CyrusOne is a real estate investment trust (REIT) specializing in data center properties.
The company operates 35 data centers in the United States, Europe and Asia. CyrusOne has more than 950 customers, including nine Fortune 20 and 180 Fortune 1000 companies.
