A Botetourt County woman in her 80s who is in serious condition at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Southwest Virginia, Carilion Clinic and Botetourt County officials confirmed Thursday.
The woman was admitted to the hospital on March 16, exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, according to Dr. Paul Skolnik, Carilion’s chair of medicine.
“While treating the patient, Carilion’s infection prevention team followed all appropriate protocols to ensure that our staff and visitors remained safe,” the hospital system in a news release.
Carilion Clinic has so far tested 172 patients for COVID-19, with 69 negative results and one positive. Carilion is awaiting results for remaining 102.
As of March 19, Virginia has 95 confirmed cases of COVID-19, an increase of 23% from the day before, according to the Virginia Department of Health and Carilion Clinic.
