Construction begins on 161-room Hyatt Place Hotel in Arlington

The Schupp Cos. has started work on an eight-story, 161-room Hyatt Place hotel in the Courthouse area of Arlington.  Scheduled for completion in summer 2016, the $40 million project will include space for a restaurant and underground parking for 80 cars.

According to Vienna-based Schupp, the project should create more than 100 construction jobs. After it’s completed, the hotel is expected to generate annual taxes of more than of $1 million for Arlington.

The hotel, at the corner of Wilson Boulevard and Adams Street, was a long time in the making. Schupp first filed for zoning and site plan approval from Arlington in 2007. It obtained the county’s approval in May 2014. During a groundbreaking ceremony last week, owner and developer Ray Schupp said in a statement, ”I have imagined this day for a long time … My family and I are extremely excited by the project that lies ahead and the future of this hotel on Arlington’s vibrant Rosslyn/Ballston corridor. “

According to the company, the Hyatt Place will be the first hotel in Arlington built to LEED gold standards and the first LEED Gold Hyatt Place in the world.

Located two blocks away from the Courthouse Metro station, the project will contribute $2.2 million in community benefits for improvements to the Metro, affordable housing, public art and underground utilities.

Gordon and Greenberg architects, in collaboration with WDG, designed the hotel.

The project will be primarily funded by EagleBank, and Hitt Contracting will serve as the general contractor.
