Virginia has 9,952 COVID-19 cases confirmed by testing, the Virginia Department of Health reported Wednesday afternoon, as well as 314 probable cases.

The confirmed virus-related death toll is 347, and 1,656 COVID-19-positive Virginians have been hospitalized. The numbers may be higher, though; this week, VDH began delineating probable cases in its daily update, following this Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protocol:

  • Meets clinical criteria AND epidemiologic evidence with no confirmatory laboratory testing performed for COVID-19.
  • Meets presumptive laboratory evidence AND either clinical criteria OR epidemiologic evidence.
  • Meets vital records criteria with no confirmatory laboratory testing performed for COVID19.

Also, the Eastern Shore Health District reported two more deaths related to the virus Wednesday: a man and a woman, both in their 50s. The New River Health District reported its first COVID-19 death Wednesday night but did not offer any details about the patient.

Nationwide, the number of cases is at 842,319, according to the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 dashboard, and the CDC reports 44,575 deaths.
