RICHMOND White House party crasher Tareq Salahi has decided to pursue his gubernatorial ambitions as an independent rather than as a Republican as he initially planned. Salahi announced those plans Monday morning, hours before the 5 p.m. deadline for statewide candidates to file with the Virginia Republican Party to be on the slate for the GOP nominating convention in May.

Effort to repeal gay-marriage ban fails in House panel

RICHMOND An effort to begin the process of repealing Virginia’s constitutional amendment prohibiting gay marriage was turned back today in a House of Delegates subcommittee. The amendment, approved by voters in a 2006 referendum, defines marriage as "only a union between one man and one woman.”

Virginia committee approves two bills for veterans

RICHMOND A Virginia Senate committee today approved two measures for the state’s veterans. The first, SB829, would direct the Department of Veterans Services to create a program for reducing veteran unemployment. The program would assist business in hiring, training and retaining veterans and create a certification program for participating employers.
