Fox pens focus of review in Va. General Assembly

RICHMOND Fox penning is getting a critical look in the Virginia General Assembly. The sport involves setting loose hunting dogs on foxes or coyotes in fenced preserves. A Senate committee will hear a bill today that would phase out the practice, which occurs almost exclusively in Southside Virginia.

Assembly OKs waiver for temporary Chesapeake jail

RICHMOND Both houses of the General Assembly agreed today to let Chesapeake receive a waiver from state construction requirements that would enable the city to house inmates in its temporary jail facilities. The city spent $8 million on temporary steel buildings to ease overcrowding in the city jail without getting the required authorization from the state Department of Corrections.
