RICHMOND Legislation to require drug screening of welfare recipients has failed by one vote in the Virginia Senate. All 20 Democrats voted against the measure today in the evenly divided Senate. Republican Sen. Harry Blevins of Virginia Beach did not vote, denying the GOP a 20th vote that would have allowed Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling to break the tie.

Va. House votes to give schools A-F letter grades

RICHMOND Entire schools would get letter grades just like students do, if legislation passed today by the Virginia House of Delegates becomes law. One of Gov. Bob McDonnell’s education initiatives, the measure (HB1999) would require the state Board of Education to assign grades of A through F to all public schools and to make the information public.
