RICHMOND Polls have closed in Virginia's obscure primary and voters stayed away in droves as Democrats selected their down-ballot statewide slate. Both parties also chose nominees for a total of 11 House of Delegates seats, including senior legislators who faced challenges by party activists.

In obscure off-year primary, paltry turnout likely

RICHMOND With the major party gubernatorial choices for this fall settled, a paltry turnout is expected today as Virginia Democrats pick their down-ballot nominees and nominations are decided for 11 contested House of Delegates seats. Republican Ken Cuccinelli and Democrat Terry McAuliffe are already nominees for governor, leaving the off-year primary without its marquee races.

Virginians to receive $33M in foreclosure settlement

More than 22,500 borrowers in Virginia who went through foreclosures will receive checks for about $1,480 each, Virginia’s attorney general, Ken Cuccinelli, announced Monday. That is a result of a nationwide settlement last year with five mortgage servicers: Ally (formerly GMAC), Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo.

Ex-Norfolk officer challenges Del. Howell in primary

The first time retired Norfolk police Officer Rick James tried to unseat Del. Algie Howell Jr., in a Democratic primary two years ago, fewer than 2,200 people turned out to cast a ballot. Just fewer than 900 of them picked James. The remaining 1,300 chose Howell, who has held Virginia's 90th House District seat since 2004.
