Salem-based Carter Machinery Co. Inc., an independent dealer of Caterpillar Inc. equipment, entered into an agreement to acquire Baltimore-based Alban Tractor Co. Inc. effective Feb. 4, the company announced Wednesday.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Carter Machinery will become the Caterpillar dealer in a territory that will now include Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland and Delaware. Formerly a division of Caterpillar that was once the largest U.S. dealer of Caterpillar equipment, Carter Machinery has been working in construction and equipment for 92 years, serving customers in Virginia and West Virginia. It currently employs approximately 1,350 people.

Alban Tractor was established in 1927 and employs approximately 750 people across 16 locations.

“Carter’s growth is evidence of the caliber of our employees’ expertise and the speed at which they service the industry to ensure customer success every day,” Carter CEO Drew Parker said in a statement. “Carter is enthused about expanding our services to more customers with the same commitment that our Virginia and West Virginia customers have come to rely upon.”

Carter Machinery carries 70 other brands in addition to Caterpillar at their dealerships.
