A new VelocityCare urgent-care clinic will open in Lexington in May.

Carilion Clinic is renovating a building at 110 Houston St., Suite D, which is adjacent to Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital. The facility’s proximity to the hospital reflects Carilion’s effort to offer urgent care as a complement to its primary-care and emergency departments.

“We will renovate it and put in what we typically have at VelocityCare centers, including radiology, onsite lab testing capabilities and four patient rooms,” said Hannah Cline, a spokeswoman for Carilion Clinic in Roanoke.

The facility will be the eighth urgent-care center for Carilion Clinic in Southwest Virginia.

“Carilion has responded to the No. 1 identified need from our Community Health Needs Assessment Survey that was conducted last year,” Chuck Carr, vice president of Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital,” said in a statement.  “The number of people with minor injuries who have come into our emergency department in the past several years indicates a real need for VelocityCare in our community.

For patients, Carilion says VelocityCare provides a lower cost alternative for people seeking treatment for minor ailments or what Carr referred to “urgencies.’”

Joining the Carilion team is Dr. Robert S. Childers, who has been seeing patients at other VelocityCare locations while the Lexington facility undergoes renovations.

In addition to urgent-care treatment, the clinic will offer occupational medicine services to the employers. The services are aimed at decreasing lost work time.

Construction on  the clinic is scheduled to begin within the month.
