New York-based software company CA Technologies plans to acquire Herndon-based Xceedium, a private network security software company.

Terms of the deal, announced Tuesday, were not disclosed.

The companies have signed a definitive agreement on the acquisition, which is expected to close this quarter.

CA, a publicly traded company, said the acquisition will extend its portfolio of security products, helping customers to control and protect user accounts from external attacks or insider mistakes and malicious misuse.

Xsuite, Xceedium’s platform, provides a point of authentication for administrators, brokering the release of credentials for shared administrative accounts without exposing them to the risk of theft, compromise, or misuse.

“Stealing and exploiting privileged accounts is a central element of the kill chain in cyber attacks of all kinds, regardless of attacker origin,” Glenn Hazard, Xceedium’s CEO, said in a statement. “We’re excited to join forces with CA to help deliver a next generation threat mitigation suite to the market that directly addresses these devastating data breaches and attacks.”

Xceedium was founded in 2000 and has offices in Jersey City, N.J., and Ottawa, Canada.

CA has 11,500 employees in 45 countries.
