What do you wish more people knew about emergency medicine? While we may not always provide an immediate diagnosis, our primary objective is to assess and calculate the risk associated with your medical condition. Our focus lies in determining whether there’s a heightened risk requiring hospitalization or if the situation can be managed through outpatient measures. Our efforts are dedicated to swiftly analyzing and prioritizing your health needs, ensuring that you receive the most appropriate and timely care.

How has your job changed since the pandemic? During the pandemic, we successfully launched a virtual clinic named Proper Care (Providing Post-Emergency Care). This clinic is designed to serve as a bridge between emergency care and longitudinal primary care. It is operated by a group of emergency physicians, the majority of whom are also trained in internal medicine. The clinic has proven especially valuable at VCU Health, where a significant portion of our patient population faces social determinants of health, making it challenging to navigate the health care system. I had the privilege of leading this effort and continue to do so today.

What do you like most about Charlottesville? I love biking, trail running and hiking in the Charlottesville area. I am a Virginia girl at heart and am very lucky to live in a beautiful part of the world. 

Favorite dish: I love braised beef served with egg noodles. However, my vegan daughter, Stella, has influenced me such that I have not eaten beef in some time!

What are your thoughts on the new weight-loss drugs on the market? Ozempic (Wegovy) and Mounjaro (Zepbound) are very effective drugs for diabetes and weight loss. There have been significant supply chain shortages as the manufacturers try to meet the demand. It is important to understand that these drugs are effective only while you are taking them and that weight regain often occurs upon stopping them. 

What do you wish more people knew about endocrinology? I wish people knew more about the shortage in endocrinologists. We have fewer endocrinologists today than 15 years ago, yet the demand for our profession is ever increasing, so be patient after a referral.

What progress is being made in treating autoimmune diseases, and how accessible are these treatments to Virginia patients? We have made great strides in both diagnosing and treating autoimmune diseases. Due to recent rapid growth in medical science, there has been an acceleration in rheumatology knowledge and treatment. We have many more advanced therapies, and they’re available close to home for patients.

How do you feel about telehealth, and what’s one thing you’d advise remote video patients? I love telehealth and use it frequently. We all had concerns about telehealth before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we have seen that practice does really make perfect. In our environment, I find telemedicine especially helpful as a tool to reduce travel time for patients known to the practice — with a clear diagnosis and on medications that are effective — who require routine follow-up.

I would urge caution in situations where a diagnosis is not known, and in new patients. There is no substitute for face-to-face communication and physical examination to establish rapport with new patients, especially as many times difficult topics may need to be discussed. In new patients, telehealth can be helpful in establishing what tests may be needed before an in-person appointment.
