Nellysford-based Bold Rock Hard Cider is expanding to North Carolina. The company said this week it plans to start producing its cider at a new facility near Asheville, N.C. in May.

Like Bold Rock’s production facility in Nellysford, the Mills River, N.C.- operation will make craft cider from local apples picked at nearby orchards.

The apples in North Carolina will be sourced from Hendersonville-based Apple Wedge Packers, a fifth-generation family-owned business that has been operating for over 150 years.

According to a news release, the company was drawn by the area’s quality fruit.  Bold Rock’s chairman, CEO and co-founder John Washburn also has family roots in the Mills River-area of North Carolina and was excited to expand where he spent much of his youth, the release said.

Bold Rock was founded in 2012 with jthree employees. Today, it distributes its product from Pennsylvania to South Carolina. Last fall, the company expanded in Nellysford, adding a 12,000-square-foot tasting room.
