Health Care 2023: SEAN T. CONNAUGHTON

As leader of the nonprofit trade association representing 27 health care systems and hospitals since 2014, Connaughton strives to support the sustainability of Virginia’s health care system, reduce health care costs and improve the health of Virginia residents.

A former chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors who also practiced law for 15 years, Connaughton served as state transportation secretary under Gov. Bob McDonnell. He is also a retired Navy Reserve commander who served on active duty with the Coast Guard and is board chair and president of the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial Foundation, an organization that aims to build an education center next to the 9/11 Memorial in Arlington.

A U.S. Naval War College graduate, Connaughton earned degrees from George Mason University, Georgetown University and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
