Leesburg environmental firm wins $136.9M NOAA contract

Leesburg-based environmental contracting firm Lynker has received a $136.9 million, five-year contract from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to provide scientific support to the National Weather Service’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction.

Work is expected to begin Sept. 1 and will be performed at the weather services’ Environmental Modeling Center in College Park, Maryland, according to a news release.

More than 100 scientists, engineers and software developers will assist the agency, which uses mathematical modeling for predicting climate, Lynker founder and CEO Joe Linza told Virginia Business.

“The goal always, always is to have … more accurate and more timely predictions, and to always improve it,” Linza said. “NOAA has a culture of constant improvement, and we certainly do as well.”

Subcontractors will include Reston-based Science Applications International Corp. and Rockville, Maryland-based Axiom Consultants Inc.

Founded in 2009, Lynker is an employee-owned company with a workforce of more than 400 people across the country.
