LookingGlass appoints former CIA officer to advisory board

Reston-based cybersecurity contractor LookingGlass Cyber Solutions Inc. announced Monday that it appointed former CIA officer William T. “Terry” Burruss to its advisory board.

Burruss is a retired senior intelligence service officer and was most recently deputy chief of the Center for Cyber Intelligence in the CIA’s Directorate of Digital Innovation. He oversaw intelligence collection, analysis and operations focused on foreign cyber threats and specialized in assessing technological risks and addressing them.

“I am thrilled to join the LookingGlass advisory board because of the company’s commitment to its customers’ missions and deep national security history,” Burruss said in a statement. “I have seen firsthand how nation-state actors continue to plague public and private sector organizations.”

Founded in 2009, LookingGlass provides cybersecurity services for the financial services, government/public, defense industrial base and energy sectors.

“Terry built the CIA’s first combined mission unit focused on understanding and countering the foreign cyber threat, and we are fortunate to have someone of this caliber join our advisory team,” LookingGlass CEO Bryan Ware said in a statement. “As LookingGlass deepens our commitment to helping solve complex, nation-scale cybersecurity challenges, Terry’s unique credentials and expertise will be invaluable to our already deep advisory board bench.”

Reston-based LookingGlass acquires Next5

Reston-based cyber intelligence firm LookingGlass Cyber Solutions Inc. will acquire Washington, D.C.-based technology consulting firm Next5, the company announced May 11.

As part of the acquisition, Next5 CEO and founder Bryan Ware was named CEO of LookingGlass. He is replacing Gilman Louie as CEO, who has moved to the role of executive chairman, LookingGlass spokesperson Mary Yang said.

Financial terms were not publicly announced. Next5’s 15 Leesburg-based employees will be integrated with LookingGlass’s Reston-based workforce of 95 employees, Yang said.

Before founding Next5, Ware was appointed the assistant director of cybersecurity at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), a position he held from January 2020 through November 2020, according to his LinkedIn account. He also served as an assistant secretary at DHS for cyber, infrastructure and resilience, and was a senior adviser to the department’s secretary.

“Under Bryan’s leadership, CISA’s operational partnerships with the private sector, national security community and international partners were significantly enhanced,” Louie said in a statement. “This cross-sector collaboration and engagement is necessary as our government and critical infrastructure face growing cyber threats and increasingly sophisticated threat actors.”

The acquisition complements LookingGlass’ suite of cyber solutions for federal and state governments, critical infrastructure organizations and private and public sector entities. In a statement, Ware said he will “deepen” the company’s investments, including applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to cybersecurity cases.

“Now more than ever, organizations need to understand their risk in the context of emerging technologies, greater supply chain dependencies, and an evolving threat landscape, especially as we face heightened geopolitical competition,” Ware said in a statement. “This is why I’m excited to join LookingGlass. Next5’s expert network and business intelligence services combined with LookingGlass’s innovative technologies only strengthens our ability to support our customers’ critical cyber missions.”

Reston’s LookingGlass Cyber Solutions acquires Texas tech firm

Reston-based cybersecurity contractor LookingGlass Cyber Solutions Inc. has acquired Austin, Texas-based AlphaWave Inc., a cloud-native tech company that provides attack surface management services.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. In a news release, LookingGlass said the transaction will complement the Reston company’s existing cybersecurity services for federal and state government customers by “enabling deeper attack surface visibility into cloud and container environments.”

“AlphaWave’s cloud-native foundation enables them to clearly understand the nuances of managing one’s attack surface across the cloud and containers. This expertise is only going to become more critical as the private sector and government continue to undergo digital transformations and move to cloud-first strategies. We are excited to bring AlphaWave’s expertise and attack surface capabilities into the LookingGlass Suite as we deliver actionable threat intelligence enhanced with an adversary’s view and customized models of an adversary’s capabilities,” said LookingGlass CEO Gilman Louie in a statement.
