Belfort Furniture, a -based home furnishing retailer, announced this week that it has purchased a 260,000-square-foot distribution center in for $14 million.

The new center, located on a 22-acre property at 351 Station Road in , will support improved delivery efficiency, increased inventory and company growth. The company said it will keep its corporate offices and 150,000 square feet of retail showroom space in Dulles, and that the Berryville expansion allows it to serve more customers while keeping its headquarters and retail operations anchored locally.

Belfort recently sold the site of its current 83,330-square-foot distribution center in to for $28.5 million and plans to vacate that space in June.

The Berryville complex is more than triple the size of Belfort’s current , and the company is starting a multimillion-dollar renovation of the facility, which is intended to serve as a central distribution hub and will also include an on-site furniture outlet.

“It was a strategic opportunity to give ourselves more space and flexibility to grow in a few different ways,” Belfort President Matt Huber said. “And to grow beyond our current single location, we needed to have a larger distribution center. While we don’t have any immediate things to announce about expansion, this would allow that in the future.”

The Berryville site has a long industrial history, having once been the largest apple distribution plant east of the Mississippi River in the 1940s and later operating as a cabinet manufacturing plant. According to Clarke County records, the most recent owner was Pleasant Acres Apartments.

Huber said there are a few current tenants at the Berryville facility, such as Revel Gymnastics, and that Belfort anticipates keeping some of them, so it won’t use all 260,000 square feet at first. He expects many of the employees working at the new site to be existing employees redirected from the Sterling location.

The new site is expected to be operational in May or June.

Belfort employs more than 125 people and delivers to more than 30,000 households annually throughout the Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. metropolitan region.
