James B. Mears has been named CEO of Newport News-based BayPort Credit Union.
Mears will assume the post on April 1. He will be the credit union’s fifth CEO in its 91-year-history.
Mears has worked for BayPort for 25 years. For the past 15 years, he has been senior vice president, chief operations officer.
Before joining PayPort, he was an audit manager with a local accounting firm.
Mears has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bridgewater College and also is a CPA.
The board of directors started an executive search in 2018 when BayPort's president and CEO, George R. Dudley Jr., announced his retirement after 25 years as CEO.
In May 2018, the board appointed Stanley P. Leicester II as interim CEO.
