BAE Systems has a big week

Arlington-based defense company BAE Systems Inc. (a subsidiary of United Kingdom-based BAE Systems plc) had a big week for federal awards — landing three major contracts with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marine Corps totaling more than $221 million.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced the Navy had awarded BAE Systems a $117.8 million contract to help the Chief of Naval Operations prepare for a scheduled depot maintenance of the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Preble. BAE Systems will perform repair, alteration and upgrade work on the vessel. The project is anticipated to be completed by February 2022.

BAE Systems will also work on an $85 million Air Force contract to continue to develop, deploy, modernize, and maintain cross-domain solutions that allow for secure transfer of sensitive information between government networks, the company announced Wednesday. 

“As the military cyberspace battlefield expands, we understand how critical it is that secure, innovative intelligence solutions are available to warfighting commands and combat support agencies to communicate safety and effectively,” Pete Trainer, vice president and general manager of BAE Systems’ Air Force Solutions business, said in a statement.

Under the contract, BAE Systems will provide high-assurance, cross-domain technologies for the Air Force Research Laboratory’s government networks. Doing so will enable end-users to access information and analysis, according to the company.

On Friday, BAE Systems also announced it will work on a $19 million contract from the Marine Corps. to design a wargaming center prototype using artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics, modeling and simulation processes. The Marine Corps wants to build the center at Marine Corps Base Quantico to support metrics analysis and training for the service branch’s warfighting operations, according to the company.

“We will build on our experience supporting the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory Wargaming Division and partner with a diverse team of digital technology experts to produce an advanced prototype to help train an efficient, precise, and consistent force capable of fighting future wars in multiple domains,” Peder Jungck, vice president and general manager of BAE Systems’ Intelligence Solutions business, said in a statement. “This prototype will integrate big data and advanced analytics in a secure cloud environment for future wargaming design and assessments.”

BAE Systems Inc. employs approximately 35,100 people across the U.S., U.K., Sweden and Israel. The company generated $11.4 billion in sales last year. BAE Systems Inc. is an independent U.S. subsidiary of England-based BAE Systems plc, one of Europe’s top defense contractors.
