RICHMOND On an overcast Tuesday, voting rights advocates gathered for an afternoon State Capitol rally to protest policy proposals they view as voter suppression efforts. Hours earlier, the General Assembly had already rained on them by approving bills applying new rules to broad voter registration efforts and limiting the forms of identification voters can bring to the polls.
Last bicycle tailgating bill dies in Virginia House
RICHMOND Bicyclists can’t catch a break from the 2013 General Assembly. The last bike-friendly piece of legislation of the session breathed its last Monday. Sen. Bryce Reeves’ bill (SB1060), which would have made it illegal to tailgate a bicycle, was defeated in the House of Delegates, 55-42.

RICHMOND A House committee this morning defeated a bill aiming to close the gap between the average teacher’s salary nationally and in Virginia. SB1186 would have made it Virginia’s goal for teachers to earn a paycheck that’s competitive with the national average teacher salary. Right now, there’s a nearly $3,000 gap, according to the Virginia Education Association.
Va. committee bids farewell to longtime chairman Tata
RICHMOND With a standing ovation, the House Education Committee this morning bid farewell to their longtime leader, Del. Bob Tata. Today was Tata’s last meeting with the panel, which he’s led as chairman for the past seven years. He's served on the committee for his entire 30-year legislative career.
