ATK said Monday that it has completed the preliminary design review of its solid rocket booster for NASA’s new Space Launch System (SLS).
The new SLS is designed to take NASA’s human spaceflight exploration deeper into space. The first flight of the SLS is scheduled for 2017.
“This is a tremendous milestone for ATK as we work toward building the boosters for our country’s Space Launch System,” Charlie Precourt, vice president and general manager of ATK’s Space Launch division, said in a statement. “NASA’s SLS will enable human exploration for decades to come.”
With completion of the premiliary design, ATK’s booster can now proceed with activities required to advance the design toward Critical Design Review.
