Pry’s first full season leading the Hokies ended with a 3-8 record in 2022. But in sports, there’s always next season, so Pry has used the downtime to bolster his staff.

In March, he brought in another Brent, former Army offensive coordinator Brent Davis, as a temporary offensive consultant. (Most of Pry’s experience is as a defensive coach or coordinator.) He also hired former Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach James Johnson as director of high school relations for the football team, a move expected to bolster recruiting.

His father is Jim Pry, who has held a variety of positions on collegiate coaching staffs, including offensive coordinator at Virginia Military Institute from 1984 to 1988, while his son was in high school. As a graduate student, he was on the coaching staff at Virginia Tech from 1995 to 1997, a period when the Hokies appeared in three bowl games.

Counting those three matches, Pry has coached in 14 bowl games, including six with Pennsylvania State University. He spent eight seasons at Penn State, six as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach before returning to Blacksburg at the end of the 2021 football season.
