Cal Ribbens has been named interim executive director of the Biocomplexity Institute at Virginia Tech.

Ribbens currently is a professor at the university and head of its computer science department.

His appointment follows the announced departure of the institute’s executive director, Chris Barrett.

“I am excited by the opportunity to work with the researchers at the institute who are at the forefront of developing new technologies and computational platforms to address some of the most complex problems we face as a society,” Ribbens said in a statement.

Ribbens, a member of the computer science department since 1987, has focused his research on advancing high-performance computing and its applications for computational science and engineering. He was named associate head for the department in 2003, associate head for undergraduate studies in 2008, and department head in 2015.

Ribbens completed his undergraduate degree in mathematics at Calvin College. He earned his master’s and doctorate degrees in computer science from Purdue University.
