Born in West Bromwich, England, Patel relocated to the United States in 1982. He earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1992, but his entrepreneurial spirit led him in a different direction. He opened a Sleep Inn in Richmond in 1996 with his parents’ support, and Kalyan Hospitality was born.
Kalyan, which operates hotels under several brands, including Hilton, Marriott International, and InterContinental Hotels Group, owns more than 30 hotels. It added to its footprint in Virginia in early 2024 by acquiring two hotels in Roanoke and two in Farmville. In addition to hotels under development here, it is also developing properties in Oregon and Washington state. The company, which also provides hospitality management services, has diversified into apartments and student housing.
