A graduate of Dickinson College with an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Sheehy initially resisted joining the family’s auto business. Instead, he spent several years in marketing and sales for Prudential and General Mills.
By the late 1980s, Sheehy changed his mind and went to work as a salesman at the Maryland dealership his dad founded in 1966. Sheehy became president of the auto stores in 1998.
Today, Sheehy Auto Stores ranks 39th in Automotive News’ 2021 list of the U.S.’s top dealership groups with 31 dealerships from Northern Maryland to Richmond. The company sold 22,585 new vehicles and 19,143 used vehicles last year, reporting $1.76 billion in revenue from all departments.
In February, Sheehy announced the acquisition of Lexus of Richmond. In April, Ford Motor Co. announced Sheehy and five others had been selected as honorees of the company’s Salute to Dealers initiative, which recognizes dealers who work to make a positive impact. Among other efforts, Sheehy Auto Stores annually organizes a 50-day effort to raise funds for the American Heart Association and raise awareness about heart disease.
