Hitt leads one of Virginia’s biggest general contractors, a family business started by his grandparents in 1930. The company finished 1,400 projects in 2021, reporting $3.38 billion in revenue — a 34% growth rate.
Hitt, who’s been with the company nearly 40 years, earned his bachelor’s degree in construction from Georgia Tech in 1984. While he’d worked with the family company as a youngster, he started as assistant project manager after graduation and worked his way to co-president in 2005.
In 2017, Hitt and co-president Jim Millar moved forward on succession planning, announcing a new generation of leaders, including CEO Kim Roy. Meanwhile, they became co-chairs of a newly formed board. Hitt Contracting also is developing a new headquarters in Falls Church, as part of Virginia Tech’s plan to establish a center for smart construction in the city.
In 2015, Hitt’s family charitable foundation donated $5 million to Virginia Tech, which broke ground in February on the $85 million Hitt Hall, a 100,000-square-foot building that will house the Myers-Lawson School of Construction.
