President and CEO since March 2004, Gottwald succeeded his father, Bruce, as chairman of the board a decade later. NewMarket is the parent company of Afton Chemical Corp. and Ethyl Corp., which manufacture lubricants and fuel additives.
NewMarket traces its roots to Ethyl Gasoline Corp., a company acquired in 1962 by his late grandfather Floyd Gottwald, president of Albemarle Paper Manufacturing Co.
Gottwald, who joined NewMarket in 1984, is part of a philanthropic family that in 2015 was named by Forbes as one of America’s richest. The family’s gifts have supported various causes, including projects such as the restoration of Tredegar Ironworks, where the American Civil War Museum is based. A graduate of Virginia Military Institute and Harvard Business School, Gottwald is a director emeritus of Venture Richmond’s board of directors and serves on the board of overseers of VMI’s Jackson-Hope Fund.
