Publicly traded furniture manufacturer and retailer Bassett Furniture Industries was founded in 1902 and continues to be headquartered in Henry County’s Bassett area, part of greater Martinsville. The company sells home furnishings in about 100 retail locations in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Spilman, who has been with Bassett for 38 years, became CEO in 2000. His father, the late Robert H. Spilman Sr., was also CEO. A Vanderbilt University graduate, Spilman served on the board of directors for Harris Teeter Supermarkets Inc. from 2002 to 2014. He has been lead director on Dominion Energy Inc.’s board of directors since 2009.

Despite the impacts of inflation, supply chain issues and factory shutdowns in Asia, Bassett Furniture reported $486.5 million in fiscal 2021 revenue, a significant increase over revenues of $386 million for 2020, when the company’s operations were disrupted by the pandemic. In January, Bassett announced that Arkansas-based J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. had acquired Bassett’s Zenith Freight Lines division for $87 million, with J.B. Hunt and Zenith continuing to ship goods for Bassett.
